On the Waterfront - New York Philharmonic

The magnificent soundtrack for On the Waterfront was Leonard Bernstein’s only original movie score. The music churns with dramatic intensity, underscoring the brutality of the docks, the tough combativeness of the longshoremen, and the dark, looming presence of the mob bosses who dominate their territory. Evocative musical highlights include a melancholy, solitary horn heralding a gloomy dawn over the docks; pulsing, racing percussion, as massive cargoes are shifted by hulking machines; the rhythms of the relentless pounding of waterfront pile-drivers; and the tender, yearning theme of the intertwined love story of the Marlon Brando and Eva Marie Saint characters. The recipient of eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, On the Waterfront has been ranked by the American Film Institute as the eighth-greatest American movie of all time and selected to be preserved in the United States National Film Registry. Written by Budd Schulberg and directed by Elia Kazan, the story is based on true events about crime and corruption on the waterfronts of Manhattan and Brooklyn, with Bernstein’s music underscoring the somber, yet triumphant conclusion.
